It's that time of year again. The season where we can't bring the girl into stores due to all the Halloween decorations that are just too terrifying for her.
Just bring her in, force her to get over it, you say?
You try shopping with a screaming six year old. You try focusing on a grocery list, with the wailing child and also dealing with people's "tsk,tsk...if she were my kid looks.
Really...why do we have to have a grim reaper skeleton with blood red eyes standing in the entrance of every store? Why do half of these skeletons need a sensor, allowing them to let out spooky laughs as we walk by? Why the ghoul-ish guy with the axe in his head?
I swear these kids are just pointing out how screwed up we are as a society. Horror and violence as entertainment.
The rest of us are just too asleep to notice.

Just wait...it will really smack you in the face when your child asks you for said costumes like my oldest did this year. Yikes!
Great post -poor Riley, poor thing. What's with the bloody gore and violence everywhere? A sensitive person could crazy with all this scary stuff all around.Good luck!
I'm with you. I don't much care for all the "spookiness" (read "gory, bloody mess"). I don't think there is anything wrong with Riley at all! The culture is a mess.
Does she have the same reaction when she passes a punker with piercings? Sometimes I want to.
Never gonna happen with Riley. Maybe Seth, but not Riley.
I HATE HALLOWEEN! What' the f'ing point? AND, why do we need to set-up for it in August?? WTF???
I'M spooked by the displays too. i also hate that in the video stores, titles like "cannibal" and "saw" with their grotesque covers are right at eye level for the kids along the wall of movies. even if i would never let my kids watch these, the cover alone suggests such horrors. "mommy? what's a cannibal?" "why is there a bloody hand in that picture?" these movies used to be in a different section so you could avoid bringing your six year old through. lets just get em started young now why don't we... i really don't understand this fascination with gore. ugh.
ranting, sorry.
on another note, michelle, i tagged you with a book meme on my blog. i hope you don't mind!
One of the saddest aspects of halloween is the distraction from the beauty of autumn...copper leaves, indigo sky and apple everything. Halloween shmalloween.
No Kelly, I don't think the teacher did it on purpose at all.
But other people in our lives question us and attempt to undermine us frequently enough.
Having a child on the autistic spectrum requires a whole different set of parenting skills.
We seem to be under attack quite often for being off the beaten path. Parenting a kid on the spectrum is hard enough. Sometimes the added pressure of the scrutiny is a but much.
It will be a great day when I am confident enough in my parenting skills that what others do, think, say won't affect me.
It will also be a great day when people don't feed my kids a bunch of crap.
