Candace Pert, Ph.D.

I’m exploring the work of Candace Pert,Ph. D, a renowned neuroscientist who discovered the opiate receptor in the 1970‘s. In Your Body is Your Subconscious Mind, she says research shows that patients with multiple personality disorder, can have different molecular make-ups based on which personality is manifesting,( verified by antibodies in blood draws just five minutes apart).

One personality will be severely allergic to something. The next one won’t be. In the same body. One personality will be far sighted. The next will be nearsighted. In other words, the thoughts we think, literally change our body chemistry.

She describes us not as solid but as flame-like, flickering back and forth based on our thoughts and our body’s reactions to our emotions.

Our minds change our bodies.

Mind you…..she doesn't appear to be someone who advocates feeling only “happy thoughts.” From what I gather, (and I’m not very far into her work) she advocates feeling all of our emotions, and not letting them get trapped in the body where they will fester and stagnate.

Candace Pert was one of the scientists in the movie
What the Bleep. I highly recommend it to anyone who finds this “consciousness creates reality” concept interesting. She is also a new blogger! Read her latest thoughts on AIDS and Autism here. Her new book, Everything You Need to Know to Feel Go(o)d, is next on my list.

Welcome to the blogosphere Ms. Pert, and thank you!

I have a quiet theory that we're all multiple personalities on some level, so I think Pert's approach is right on. Moment by moment, day by day, we have different identities based on the exact formula of our chemical goulash at any given moment.

In a moment of tiredness, I can be insensitive and rude; the next morning I'm patient and ever so understanding. One moment I impulsively say something blunt and a bit mean-spirited, the next moment another part of my personality feels regret and remorse for the act.

I do think we are different people from moment to moment, and it sounds like Pert's research bears this out.

I thought "What the Bleep" was fascinating. Equally interesting is the back story, in which we learn that the movie is actually a marketing strategy for the new age "psychic/channeler" known as Ramtha.

None of this makes the ideas presented in the movie any less interesting, though. Just makes the whole phenomenon more intriguing.

Sounds fasinating. The mind is an amazing thing and has always intriqued me. Further, when one speaks of mulitple personality it reminds me of how strong we really are that our minds could actually splinter off into fragments - to protect another part of us.
Fasinating. Will check further into this.

All I have to say is that I was writing an article the other day and talking about spam when suddenly my e-mail broke because it was overloaded with 1000 spam messages. I'm telling you, this stuff works in good ways and bad!

I'm with mystic on this one, but maybe it's just hormones. Cheers

Oh,I know! Isn't that interesting!!? Mainstream thinkers have not heard a lot about this, but I think it is starting to spill over these days. I really thought What The Bleep gave so many things to think about. And have you ever read Christianne Northrup? She is an MD, who works with women. In her book, Mother/Daughter Wisdom, she talks about this idea, and also how we can have emotional garbage passed down to us on a cell level. She tells a story of one of her patients, who was having all this loss happening-- her kid leaving for college, her dog died, ect-- all connected to her feelings of mothering, and she developed this big ball in her breast like a cyst, but when they took a look, it turned out she had started lactating! At fifty something!

I love Candace Pert. Molecules of Emotion is a great read. She scientifically validates what so many of us know by experience. I could go on and on about the cool factor and the amazing implications of her work.
