Back in the early 90’s when I was a DC radio reporter (a very non-seasoned, clueless, bad reporter) I was assigned to cover a press conference put on by the tobacco industry.
The woman at the podium was perfect. She was tall. Elegant. Intelligent. Composed. I wanted to pinch her because she seemed to be made of some non human substance, too flawless for mere flesh. Methinks she was a robot?
Anyway….at this point in time everyone knew that cigarette's were bad for you. We’d all had the black lung passed around in elementary school to scare the crap out of us. It was common knowledge. No-brainer stuff.
And yet….this woman (or whatever she was) stood at the podium, looked out into a roomful of reporters, and said “There is no evidence, that cigarettes cause cancer.”
No she didn’t?
Had I been plunged into a 90’s version of The Emperor Has No Clothes? I’d just landed this job after pounding the pavement for weeks. I had no clue how it all worked? Looking around the room, I was psyched. Surly one of these reporters, a bigger wig than me, was about to take her out.
It didn’t happen.
Everyone gathered their sound bites, scuttled off, got their quotes from the other side, put their little cookie cutter stories together and moved on to the next piece of non-news.
I felt like an idiot for not saying something but who was I? My confidence wasn’t developed. I wasn’t yet a mother.
It takes time but truth always has out in the end.
We all know what happened to Big Tobacco.
Big Pharma?
I do believe you’re next?
* Should Vaccine Court Hearings Affecting Thousands of Children be Kept Secret?
This is a question A-Champ (an advocacy group for kids with autism) is asking in a newsletter I recieved yesterday. Included in the letter was the following link:

I wish I had filed. We can't let them be secretive on this one.
Un-fu*k*%gly believable.
Some system we have.
Thank you for the education. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
Your post is powerful, and the Huffington Post article is compelling as well.
I had no idea there was this connection until I began reading your posts, so you're doing a good job of spreading the word.
Yesterday, a colleague whose wife is in special education said that its now becoming ever clearer that mercury plays a role in autisim.
Keep up the good work.
(By the way, I do heartily repent for my sins against "Dancing with the Stars." Quite a number of folks who heard the story think that I'm lucky to still own my testicles, after screwing up the taping of the finale.)
The big lie phenom...We all buy it at sometime, or another, because it's so exhausting to find out the truth. And telling it usually puts us in the minority.
Keep telling it Michelle! The minority loves you!
Oh man...This hits a spot in me. I don't think it should anything like this should be kept a secret!)there are other hot botton issues this presses in me, health-politics-wise, but this is not the time.) Anyway, Kory and I argued about to do shots or not. I gave in, and got them, but it has always made me less than thrilled. I never had them, myself.(Not because of a choice made by my parents, but because they were neglectful. But I have been fine all my life without them, anyway.) Kory's dad has never had them, because his parents were Christian Scientist. He has been fine.
I just don't know. I had read enough about the Autism connection that it has not sat right with me...
Thank you for using your blog to talk about these issues.
ox :)
well everyone know tambacoo is bad , but still its being sold worldwide openly ? why
Please keep in mind I am not anti-vaccination. Immunizations are important tools for protecting public health.
MERCURY however should never be injected into the human body. Particularly the body of a small child, or a mom carrying a fetus.
I recommend a book called "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations." In it, MD Stephanie Cave offers advice on how to vaccinate children more safely.
I HOPE Big Pharma is next.
and thanks for the book recommendation
Big Pharma and the government proctecting it should be tried for crimes against humanity.
Great post on a continually infuriating topic.
Hi Michelle, Thanks for your comment on my post about James. Yes he is very sweet. He's my child who's on the AS. He's very sensitive about it though, and often reads my posts so I don't like to say too much about it on my own blog. We've never had it officially diagnosed. A couple of years ago we had an occupational therapy assessment which suggested that he probably did have aspergers but he's been coping reasonably well in mainstream school so we're just seeing how he gets on.
I find your posts on vaccinations really interesting. I find myself in a difficult position. James had the MMR vaccination, but for obvious reasons we decided not to give Matthew the MMR and haven't given either of them any booster vaccinations. The more I have read into it, the more suspicious of the pharmaceutical companies I am. Unfortunately, a small part of my job as a health visitor is to promote vaccination. In the UK, as I'm sure is the case in the US, there is a lot of pressure on parents to vaccinate. You're made to feel like you're really negligent if you don't. I tell parents that it's really important to look into all the research fully. Not just the government line.
