Today is the day! A Cup of Comfort For Parents of Children with Autism is released.I have not finished reading the book yet. The stories are a bit overwhelming for me and I have to read it in small doses.
(Our story in on page 113).
Donna Williams, an autistic adult and author of the memoirs Nobody Nowhere and Somebody Somewhere refers to autistic people as cat people in a dog's world. I've borrowed this analogy and used it often when I'm trying to describe the best approach with Riley. Come at a cat the way you would a dog, and it might not go well. The book by Kathy Hoopmann (below) is great, but I wish it was worded "sometimes people with Asperger's......" because not all people with the diagnosis present the same exact way.
Lastly, the teaching assistant in Riley's class loaned me Rules today. I'm only 28 pages in, but so far it's great. It's written in the voice of a sibling of an autistic boy who makes a list of rules for her brother to help him navigate in the world. It is probably a good read for anyone who struggles in social situations, not just the autistic crowd.

Happy reading. :)

Happy reading. :)
Now run out and pick up your Cup of Comfort.
Off you go!
XO
Love.

Thanks for the ideas for new reading material - can't wait to start reading. Now, where did I leave my spare time? ;-)
Love!
Just ordered mine from Amazon...
Happy, happy day. Congratulations. Can't write more now, though. Gotta go order a couple books I need.
love.
Yay!! Yay!! Yay!!
Congrats Michelle!!
I'm so proud of you for opening your heart and sharing your stories with the world
I'm so excited to go buy my copy. Okay, I'm off to the bookstore...
Congratulations--can't wait to read!
Well done! Congrats on the release of the book. The "Rules" one sounds so interesting - is it fiction or non?
ps - thanks for the call to submit from the COC series. Unfortunately, I didn't really match up with any of the descriptions. I never got the pony I asked for each year . . . :)
On my way to the Amazon; dot com that is. Congratulations!!!
Great! I am sure these stories will indeed be a comfort to many. I am proud of you for sharing your story!
:)
Me too!
I know Cynthia Lord (who wrote Rules) from livejournal -- she just won a Newbery honor for the book. It's fiction, but her son is autistic, so I'm sure it's based on real-life experiences. She is very sweet (and signed my book with a quote from 'Frog & Toad' - it doesn't get any better than that!).
Congratulations! So great.
Congratulations! A writer in one of my Yahoo group is friends with Nan Jacobs who is also in the book.
Hooray!
That is SO COOL! Can't wait to read it!
Congrats! You should be the first to review it on Amazon...and see if the publisher will allow exerpts on amazon. that is a big selling point.
The "Rules" book looks and sounds interesting.. LOVE the cover!
