In the last 15 minutes, three people have e-mailed to let me know Oprah will be covering autism on tomorrow's show. Thanks folks! You are the greatest! I so appreciate being alerted.
I will be interested to find out if a balanced discussion on vaccinations will be allowed, or if they will just gloss over it like the rest of the mainstream media.
Oprah is a national treasure and a personal hero (we lived in the Chicago area when Riley was a baby and I tried everyday to get tickets and NEVER got through). I can't say enough about what she means to me, or about her positive impact on the world, but I've been very disappointed at how she's ignored this autism epidemic. 1 in 150 kids. 1 in 84 boys. 1 in six kids has a developmental delay these days. How can this be ignored? How?
C'mon Oprah. I hope you're doing your homework tonight.
I'm counting on you.

I,m waiting for your reaction to this because I won't be able to watch Oprah from here.
Where has she been with this subject? Good question.

This link is to a new book on treating autism by an MD who is also a parent of an autistic child - the foreword was written by Katie Wright, whose parents founded "Autism Speaks."
Hi, Michelle. Should be interesting indeed. Oprah has avoided the topic for many years. A friend of mine took part in a gorgeous book called "Souls" - it's a black and white photo book of kids with autism taken by a famous photographer from Chicago. It came out several years ago. Oprah refused to talk to them about a show. What's changed? I have no idea. So let's see what happens.
Yours,
Kim S.
LIke you, I'm hoping and praying that Oprah presents an intelligent, balanced program.
We'll be waiting for your informed take on the info presented.
love.
Thanks so much to the person who posted the link to Sentient Publications -looks great and I ordered it. This is the way I get my information (useful info!) from other moms of autistic kids.
As for Oprah, she has done so many good things and I respect her for that, but her shows lately have really left me cold. The trailer for her show on autism does not look good to me so far, either. I wonder, too, what will be said about vaccines. I am convinced that the MMR did a number on my little boy but I get the glassy-eyed stare when I mention it to doctors and teachers - you know the story.
I watched her show today and really was appalled when she asked the soldiers who had just returned from Iraq who embraced their families for the first time since returning if they thought they might die over there. Come on!
Oh...this worries me.
I have not seen the trailers. I hardly ever get to see the actual show these days. It's on when I'm cooking our specific carb GF/CF soy free dinner don'tcha know?
And how bout a shout out to all the autism moms who are making homemade candy and coming up with a bunch of Easter alternatives for their sweet little GF/CF kiddos.
We rock. Yes...we do.
Anonymous, that book looks fantastic. Every pediatrician should get one. THANK YOU!
i won't be able to watch but pls let us know what you think, mkay?
I've got my fingers crossed. It's HIGH f'ing time she does shows (plural) about the special needs out there! That's her least served audience, in my biased opinion!
Katie Wright has made her split from Autism Speaks loud and clear. She is now a board member of The National Autism Association and spoke about her son's regression after vaccines - complete with video on Oprah today. I blogged about this too.
It's a good day for kids with autism.
Woo-hoo!!!! I've got my VCR all set to record in case any little rugrats interrupt during the east coast showing this afternoon.
Thanks for the sneak preview Kim. I'm running right over to your blog now to read.
