Dr. Oz

Oprah's buddy Dr. Memhet Oz has his own show on XM radio these days. He's a well respected heart surgeon who also happens to be interested in alternative medicine. His wife Lisa is often on with him and she's not intimidated by the M.D. after his or anyone elses name. LOVE HER!

Last week on his show, Dr. Oz said when his children were babies, he and his wife decided not to vaccinate until they were six months of age. His wife was breastfeeding, so they were getting her immunity anyway and he questioned whether the vaccines would be effective in a newborn who had not developed antibodies yet. He was not anti-vaccine, but pro common sense.

I found that refreshing.

Common sense? You're right Michelle. As in "where's the common sense of injecting 25 micrograms of mercury into a pregnant woman or an infant in a flu vaccine." And "Where's the common sense in activating the human immune system 48 times by 6 years of age?" The American Academy of Pediatrician's recommend immunization schedule calls for 48 hits by 72 months. Maybe we're just overwhelming our children's bodies in an effort to eradicate ALL disease, whether deadly or not? I think most of us just want some "common sense" research. Not anti-vaccine at all. Just study whether the huge increase in vaccine numbers coupled with studying the adjuvants and preservatives to determine if our program is still safe.

I don't recall ever being asked if I wanted my child vaccinated in the hospital. I did not know I could decline. I think there was a hepatitis vaccine given in the hospital as a newborn. I'm horrified of it now of course. Once at a doctor's office when my child was little I was told my child could not come back to the office unless he was not vaccinated. I knew so little then. I have since claimed religious preference. I don't know how long I can get away with it; hopefully as long as I want. We needed studies a long time ago; I hope we are becoming so loud that we will get them.

In many states you can get your DAN! doc to write a medical exemption as well.

I'm sure you signed a consent for the vaccinations your child received at birth, but when you've just had a baby you sign a zillion things. "Informed" consent is totally different ball game.
