Good Morning

Lunch in a crowded school cafeteria can be a bit much when you're extra sensitive. Luckily for Riley, she has the option of the cafeteria, or inviting a couple of classmates to join her in the sensory room for a more intimate meal.

This is just another example of how her school is getting it right. Riley isn't the weird girl, freaking out, crying or covering her ears because of the noise. She's the one everyone hopes will pick them, to have lunch with.

Yesterday morning, I stood outside the school with her. She doesn't file in with all the other second graders. It's too wild. We wait for a teacher or aide to come out and get her, but before the aide arrived, one of her little lunch buddies, a "typical," took her hand instead. They walked into school together, the aide watching from ten feet down the hall. The mom watching from ten steps outside the door.

Two little girls, holding hands as they file into school, like it's no big thing.

My heart is full.

The best days start with stories of Riley triumphs. I'm now expecting this to be a great day.

For some reason, this one reminded me of Seth telling people not to shout because his sister has sensitive ears. That might be my all-time-favorite of your stories.

You and HT are raising some darn fine kids there, Miss O'N. Darn fine.

Day Two:

Riley went in today with her new friend as well! This time there were four sweet little girls hovering about her on the way in, and yesterday's friend holding her hand again.

You always make me cry in public coffee houses!

What a beautiful image.

She's unfolding, right where she's at, and others are seeing what a special place that is.

Wow- this school sounds awesome. I want to eat in the "sensory" lunch room!!!
No worries about the backpacks -let it go. You got it going on and it's okay if all you do is sigh "augh" slightly loud - you're not alone!
We love you - you're doing A O K.

Beautiful. Amazing how our kids can thrive when those around them take the time to make minor adjustments that have major impact. Mazel Tov! (I just felt Jewish today.)

Wil is eleven, 5th grade and a boy, and his classmates still hold his hand openly and accompany him wherever he needs to go. Kids know the score, glad schools are catching up. In schools like this everyone wins, everyone!

As is mine from hearing about it.

I love this moment, for Riley and for you, and also love Carrie's response. Kids have so much to teach us.
