What If.......?

I've been tossing around an idea in my brain.

What if "autism" is something gone terribly right?

I know. That statement might rub me just the teensiest bit the wrong way if my child was smearing poop on the walls, if she was still screaming 24/7, or if she had never said, "Mommy." It will inevitably rub me the wrong way at some point this very day, when my "high functioning" child displays her inflexibility, or when I catch myself worrying about her future.

But I'm not talking about the daily nitty-gritty. I'm talking about the big picture.

There is a line in A Course in Miracles that says, "I do not know what I am looking at so I must not judge what I see." It applies to all situations.

A teacher once told me a parable about an ant and a tree in winter. To the ant, with it's short life span, the tree looks dead. It's over. The ant is not able to know...from his tiny perspective, what will happen come spring.

We do not yet know the purpose of autism in the grand scheme of the Universe. On a soul level, why are these kids here?

Our daughter has turned our lives inside out and upside down. She has taken us through the fire. We are better people for having had this child. Let's see....the potential for 1 in 150 sets of "better," more compassionate, less judgemental, conscious parents. Not to mention siblings and extended family. Not to mention friends. Not to mention blog readers! What are the ripple effects?

What if I re-direct my thoughts of victimhood and worry, to thoughts of appreciation for what these brave souls are bringing to the planet?

What if, there is more to this epidemic, than I can see?

If it weren't Sunday and I had a whole day of Rojo ahead, I'd stand up and give you an ovation. I do agree with you, on a cellular level. Totally.

Thank you for bringing this up. We can talk about where the autism came from (i.e, vaccines, etc.) but in the grand scheme...look at this "epidemic"...what are these souls doing? What have they chosen? The fact that there are so many, to me, point to the dawn of a new era...turning the world upside down to view it differently. Are they helping us usher in a new era, a new world?

Michelle, it's something I toss around all of the time. I alternate on "bad" days from victimhood - why did THIS happen - to, when I can get emotinal distance - Wait a minute, he has a soul and his soul must know what it's doing..what can I take from this experience, etc....

A friend an I have been discussing this for years. Could this be some evolutionary response to the environment? Crystal children ?(a little out there but fascinating to read about). A divine intervention to get humans more on track?

On my good days I like to think that we all in some way 'chose' this path.

Thanks for stopping by. As you can see, I could not resist returning the favor.

I think you may be on to something with the idea you posit. I think I better take down my A Course in Miracles and do some more reading.

You might find some ideas of interest in the Messages from Michael series of books by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. You might also find some additional information at the Micheal website. Dave Gregg, the web master of the site, encourages folks to sign up for additional news. Periodically there are channeling sessions that are quite informative and provide some support to your particular view of the universe.

May peace and love be with you and your family.

I have a senior boy in my 5th period class who is on the spectrum. I know that he makes us laugh, challenges us to be considerate and patient, and helps us see things we wouldn't normally see. 35 other students and me the teacher every day for one hour experience the wonder of his soul!

Thanks for this post.

You are so right on it, sister. And there's no doubt that Miss M has taught me how to parent and teach.

The other day, some friends were making fun of Jenny McCarthy's belief in Indigo Children, and while I am a bit reticent about the whole thing, there is truth to the belief that our loved ones on the spectrum are here for a very specific reason.

Ya, know....whether or not people believe in "indigo" children, they ought to give Ms. McCarthy some respect. Especially if they have a child on the spectrum.

Her book Louder Than Words was a powerful vehicle toward more understanding for what kids on the spectrum and families are going through. Many kid's lives will be greatly improved as a direct result of her sharing her story.

My college thesis looked at 'dissociation' and questioned the assumption that we 'separate' from a 'solid' self, and suggested, instead, that all animals 'alter' consciousness, that we 'associate' to things we do not yet no how to name and identify. Same applies to the descriptions of autism. Our psychological definitions often say more about our lack of understanding of our own nature than of these children who do not fit the map.

You're absolutely right, Michelle. It is always what we do with what we have that matters. How we choose to write the story. Thanks for the reminder.

I don't find that hard to believe.

In fact...I thing that is the only way to see it.

This is beautiful. You're right. We do not know what we see so we MUST not judge it. Easier to do from the "outside", I know.

Very good point. I found your blog through Drama Mama's. My daughter is autistic and I am just wild about her. I know what you mean about the screaming all day part. If she was still in that phase I think I would be curled up in the corner at this point. But, we made it through and she is doing better. We learned and continue to learn and she is just pure joy to me.
