The Portfolios

By the time Riley started receiving OT (paid for out of pocket, our insurance consistently denied coverage) at 3 1/2 years old, her self care skills were that of an 18 month old.

She had fine motor delays, gross motor delays, and a very low frustration tolerance. She balked at the idea of coloring. Her hands wouldn't do what her smart little brain envisioned. She hated crayons.

When she finally started to draw and color, I was ecstatic. I saved everything. I took all her masterpieces and put them in a big three ring binder. Seth got one too and we called these notebooks their "portfolios."

They each have a few of these but I am over saving every piece of "art." There is no way. There are just too many.

But we had a snow day today, and they spent hours pouring over their portfolios, reminiscing about when they created each piece.

Sigh.

I guess it wouldn't be too much trouble to pick up a couple more binders.

* The top drawing is Riley's. It is Sponge Bob. As you can see, he is sparring with Sandy...but Sandy is going so fast, she's merely a blur. The bottom painting is of course, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, done by "Zeth."

There are so many different adorable elements of this post, I really don't know where to begin. I love it.

I am scanning my little ones that way I will have virtual copies.

the scanning sounds like such a great idea but there is still something about the paper and the feel of the crayon.

I have several huge trunks and giant rubbermaid containers full of my son's work from all the too many years ago.

And I travel through them often - I'm glad that I saved every piece.

Shame on insurance for not covering OT!

Oh that clears that up! I thought Iportion was actually scanning the kids. A good idea, to save one at each stage of development. ; ). Like cloning but cheaper.

And yes, we've had insurance companies flat out say, "we don't cover autism." Happens all the time. As if "autism" fits neatly under one blanket, and as if parents are just wanting to party it up at all those "unnecessary" OT sessions.

Believe me I would not have been hauling our butts there twice a week @ 150 bucks a pop for somethng she didn't need.

Oh yeah. "We don't cover autism" - I 've heard that.

I love the Spongebob photo for many reasons - of course because it's cute.

Second, for the hard work it represents.

You are the best, absolutely, the best, as are the kiddos.

I would love to see photos of your snow day...being that it's all cloudy and rainy out this way. And would love to see some of the things along your route to school in the morning. And of your new house, too!

Oh the cuteness of the image of Riley and Zeth reminiscing!

Save that art, Michelle.

I'm making a scrapbook/cookbook for Katie's 21st birthday. Boy, do I love pulling out her old art to use for this project.

All these years later, there's still magic in those bits of creativity.
