Blume Worthy

So I met Courtney at a writing workshop, and I was blown away by a short personal essay/memoir type piece she wrote while there. Other than that, I've only read her blog, (and one chapter of another book she's already sold). I've jokingly referred to her on this blog as the next Judy Blume.

Well it's no longer a joke. I finished My So Called Family and it is, most definitely, Blume worthy. I don't say that lightly because I know how much Judy Blume means to the whole generation of reading girls I was part of. We inhaled Judy. I've no doubt Courtney will have the same effect on a new generation of young adult readers.

My So Called Family is about the angst a teenage girl experiences as she tries to connect with fellow siblings, all created with the help of the same sperm donor. It is modern and timely but speaks to the age old need of every person, to feel they belong.

This book is going to knock it out of the park and Courtney is just getting started. She's got two more in the works, already sold to Simon & Shuster.

Read more about Courtney here.

Your daughters are going to love her.

I will definitely keep my eye out for this! I just read a "young adult" book for book club, and it was very good -- the Book Thief. I feel like I missed a very good literary niche growing up -- I went from Little House on the Prairie/Black Stallion books to mystery novels and "classics" and wanted to sweep adolescence under the rug. Now that I'm an adult I can probably handle adolescence in print!

Thanks for reading, Michelle -- I'm honored that you made such a comparison. You know how I feel about Judy!
