Looky here.
President-Elect Obama is going to mandate medical insurance companies to cover treatments for autism.
We autism parents aren't kidding here. No treatment that has helped Riley(and there have been many), has ever been covered.
It's despicable.
We aren't a nation that cares about our children if we ditch one in 150 of them.
This is very, very hopeful.

Amazing what hope and positive energy can start....
I remember that we could not call Lib's diagnosis ASD, it had to be called just autism by a doctor and a letter had to go to the insurance company and other agencies because ASD was not recognized. Only a diagnosis of just "autism" would be. I wonder if I have to get the diagnosis re-termed as such now?
Also, when I read the bill, I see only group insurance mentioned. We are self-insured. I have got to research the answers to this.
Thanks for the info, it is hopeful! It has been such a crime to make so many parents scramble for money to help their kids.
Yes We Can.
Don't get me started on insurance companies. They are the best bad example of the greed and corruption that has become the norm in our culture. I am so pleased to hear that treatments will be covered.
I don't know what your circumstances are -financially speaking -but by the way many thing appear the more I read of other families with a member, sometimes more than one, with autism, it looks to me this is one instance in which my daughter and son-in-law fared well to be on the low-income side -at least here in Pennsylvania. Thus far, all the therapies both their children (one, age 5 and the other, 2 1/2) have received have all been covered by the state. Perhaps too, this is something that may differ too from state to state, regardless of income. I really don't know. But, the older child received in-home therapy -behavior and speech for two years and now is in her second year at a special pre-school program specifically for autistic children. She has done extremely well with all these programs. The little guy has been receiving therapy for a year now -occupational, speech, behavior, floortime and also now has a TSS who is supposed to begin working with him in ABA. He has done well too although because of the difference in diagnosis between him and his sister, he is roughly about 6 months behind where his sister was at this same age level. But all of this has been covered via the state, apparently through the Access card medical program. It's a shame all families don't have access to the same programs at the same cost too that my grandchildren benefit from. Income should have no bearing on whether a child is being helped or not -should all be part of their basic educational programs covered by ALL states.
When we started our own company, I was told our children were uninsurable. Thankfully I found a company that considered us a group and we were able to get insurance (expensive). What a strange country we live in.
Now that man just went from great to hero, in my book. Although sad to think all it takes to be a hero, is to do the obvious.
Indeed it is! One more reason to love him.
:)
how much do we love this man?
I know this post is not about the service dog, but I am psyched that Riley will get one!!!!!
That's great that it will be covered now. That's awesome.
I just wish he wasn't trying to require me to do fifty hours of community service per year just so I can graduate, that's all.
