In the excitement over the martial arts exam, I almost forgot to mention the birthday party Riley attended today. She was psyched to be invited. The birthday boy lives on our street, and his mom was cool with, "I might have to stay, and of course I'll have to bring Seth since Todd is working." We got there and as we took our coats off Riley balked. There were some kids she didn't know, and it was chaotic. She buried her head in my side and then I heard it. The song Barbie Girl pumping in the background. Riley likes the song's bouncy bubble gum beat.
Leaning in, I whispered in her ear...."C'mon Barbie, lets go party."
She turned her head, cocked her ear. She grinned. Then, following the music into the next room, she was off!
She had a fabulous time. She played all the games. She danced. She batted balloons. She took part in the whole thing, even singing LOUDLY, "Happy Birthday Cha, Cha,Cha!" Of course Seth had a blast too.
Friends, it's been quite a weekend. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go collapse.

Hope your Sunday calls for some quiet time. Alone.
This is me...grinning loudly from ear to ear on your behalf while you sleep.
Michelle this is just SO exciting I just had to have a little flappy session myself! Our Bear is continuing her language spurt so I'm excited anyway but this is just so BRILLIANT for you and Riley!!
You must be fit to burst!!
Thanks Kari, Wanda and Amanda!
I'm afraid I have to wait 'til Monday for that quiet time,(swim lessons and my friend's two kids are coming over today to play)but Monday will come. It will.
All is well!
Hi Michelle,
I've been enjoying your blog. You've inspired me to sign onto blogger so that I can have a name. Somehow (probably due to my lack of computer skills) forced me to set up my own blog. Not sure what I have to blog about but perhaps I can put up all of our GFCFSFCFBF recipes. Anyway, it is so special to hear about Riley. She and my Max have some things in common. They are both sensitive and both hate the bathroom. It is such a struggle. My husband and I can't believe how much he fights going. It makes me feel so mad. I must spend about three hours a week in the bathroom with him begging him to poop. Thank you for describing your frustrations. It makes me feel that my frustrations are not so terrible. It's too bad that you guys live on the other side of the country. The two of them might make nice playmates although she's a bit of an older woman.
Congrats on the great party experience.
It has indeed been a banner weekend. Wow. Bask in it!! I am.
Hi Gail!
In a autism mum sharing moment - the thing that worked the best for my youngest (of 2 with severe autism) regarding toilet was to not make a big deal about it. She did have some sensory issues around that area but being impassive about it seemed to help both of us come through the phase. Trouble is they're all so different and by the time you've finished your little celebratory jig as another phase comes to an end they'll be on to the next thing.
you know, i was so determined to stand my ground on the no barbie thing .. i mean she's horrifying really .. those unattainable proportions and all ... but then the first one came as a gift, the movies (which are embarrassingly good) and well, it was all down hill there from there.
so, hell, if it was that skinny little btch that could get riley into the party, hoorah for barbie!!
it really is wonderful that she had such a great experience. banking these successive victories is so amazing for her!! sounds like there's nothing that kid can't do these days!
All it takes is one "in"...
