Seth is sick. Sore throat, runny nose. Anyway, this precluded him from going to a birthday party for a little girl in his class yesterday. I could not find the invitation, so I called another mom from his class to see if I could get the birthday girl's number. I didn't want to be rude and just not show up without a call, after I'd RSVP'd. It went like this:
"Hello? C____? It's Michelle, Seth's mom. Do you happen to have little J's #? Seth's sick and can't make it to the party today and I lost the invite so I don't have their number."
"Um. What party? I guess my kid wasn't invited."
Crap!
"Oh. I'm sorry. I thought in kindergarten it was standard to invite the whole class."
Crap! Crap! Crap!
"Did she send invitations in the mail?"
"Well, no she gave Seth's to me at school. But she might have sent out the rest. We're not in the directory. Maybe yours got lost in the mail?"
"Huh. I don't know. I'm in the car now, so I don't have their number."
For the love of God, Crap!
"Oh, okay. Sorry to bother you!"
So much for not being rude.
In my defense, I don't know kiddie birthday party etiquette since my oldest has yet to be invited to one.

Don't sweat it! I would have done the same thing. I think you have to develop a thick skin anyway where the invites are concerned.
Sorry Seth is sick.
Crap. You weren't rude though. The crazy 'whole class invite' is pretty standard.
Riley is invited to Adam's birthday party in April this coming year, and for the next 10 years.
BWAHAHAH!!! This is SOOOO what would have happened to me! Having two that don't get invited - or even worse - "We're having a party but I know it's not your thing..." I feel your pain!
Ohhhhh this sucks!! I am glad you shared because I would very, very easily do the same thing!!!! Now I will think twice!!
i've done the same! hell, we all have at some point, no? the time that i did it, it turned out that my friend's kid never brought the invitaiton home from school, but no one knew it at the time and all we had was the 'oh crap' part.
and if you ever want to fly to boston in march, riley is also invited to darby's parties! always.
Shit happens. I stressed about it the first two years...We envited the whole class, but then I realized everyone wasn't doing it. So.
At least you didn't ask the kid! lol! The mom can just keep quiet. No harm done.
:)
Aw, an innocent mistake. I did a similar thing once 'cept with an adult party.
I just remembered, Riley was invited to a couple of birthday parties when she was three.
Also, another one that was to take place at a crowded smoky sports bar. Uh...we couldn't make it to that one.
Here's my rule. If you're a girl, you have to invite less than 1/2 the total number of girls in the class, or else ALL the girls. If you're a boy - doesn't matter.
Oh my God. Michelle, you were acting like a "typical" mom!
And Riley is ALWAYS invited over here. ALWAYS.
we have the same rule at carrie for our daughter. invite all or no more than half:)
p.s especially in the younger grades:)
or you just have one friend over.....
