Spring Break

This is Riley's creation. It is a little dish garden. Rocks, moss, sticks feathers, shells. There is grass seed under the soil; soon it will sprout up. We were invited to a birthday party at our neighbor's house over the weekend and this was the activity they were doing. Cool, huh?

The birthday party really got our creative juices flowing, just in time for spring break.

We colored T-shirts with fabric markers. You'll have to wait for those pictures because they were so fancy we had to wear them immediately and now they are in the washer.

The kids also painted toy models. GRRRRR!
And made scenery for the painted toys.

But that wasn't enough. They had to collect rocks to paint, some for the scenery above, some just as treasures to further clutter up their dressers and windowsills.

This is Seth's garden. He's proudest of the feather flag at the top. When Riley was three and four, all the other kids colored with ease. She'd get so frustrated, she'd scream, crumple her paper; her crayons would wind up flying across the room. Like a lot of kids in the A club, she got kicked out of preschool. Kicked out without even a referral.
One day it just clicked, and now she can't get enough of making art.
The kids have spent a lot of time in pj's this week(so has their mother). They each get one hour of computer per day. And they collectively get one hour of TV, at least that's what I tell myself.
It's usually way more than that. Mommy takes a phone call, a video goes in, stat. Or they stay up to watch Dancing With the Stars. That doesn't count as TV time, right?
Seth's mattress is on the floor in Riley's room so they can stay up late, chatting. It's usually a Friday thing, but we've left it in her room all week.
HT's is working, but he's made sure I get a couple of hours every morning before he leaves so I can hole up in my office and do my thing.
It's really been a wonderful spring break so far.
I love my family.

She's had a couple of small blips with the art this week, but nothing monumental. 98% fun. Huge progress.

I didn't even have to be "plugged in" to her the whole time.

The key I think is having long blocks of unterrupted time. Rushing Riley is the worst thing to do.

All that art is so much fun! And you just reminded me of why I love Apple's preschool SO MUCH!

It sounds wonderful! What a lot of fun they have had. Our break is next week, and you have given me ideas...

I was marveling at all this, thinking how past generations of moms didn't do this stuff. My grandma always thinks it is odd when we show her a "project" we did together. LOL

You are SUCH a GOOD mommy. *happy sigh*

I'm feeling the same way - a week I dreaded has turned out to be really cool (but no arts and crafts at the Link's).

Your family ROCKS!

The thing is Amber, we probably wouldn't have been this crafty this break, if not inspired by our neighbor. Isn't it wonderful how we affect each other?

And Amanda, three preschools? Very impressive.

We gave up after the first one. Riley missed a year of early intervention because of it, but wound up with a wonderful, life changing private tutor the next year.

As my grandma always said, "Things have a way of working out."

Beautiful gardens! They look like should have a wee fairy perched on a feather!
The most I could get Adam to do was a quick drawing of the Easter bunny. It is the most annoyed looking Easter bunny I've ever seen. Art therapist everywhere could go to town with it.
What's not to love about your family (except of course your blatant tea kettle exclusion)?

Oh yes, 3 pre-schools. The first was the village playgroup and we were asked to not bring her or pay for a member of staff for the session. We paid and then they asked us to please not! The second was a nursery who asked us to remove our daughter as she had communication issues - er, that's why we put her in a structured small class setting and we told you that when she started. The third placement was in a nursery where we were asked to remove her due to biting a member of staff. The fourth one, a special needs playgroup, stuck until she started school. This and all the while we were doing a Portage pre-school program with her at home. It all seem such a long time ago. Now she's in a special ed school and loving it, and they love her.
