After karate today we will descend into the pits of hell, otherwise known as Chuck E. Cheese. We could not even drive by the place when she was 4 without Riley going into a panic. She'd been once, got completely sensory overloaded, and then there was that creepy mouse. The mouse tipped her over the edge.
One of her classmates is having a birthday party there today and she wants to go. She wants to go. God help me, she wants to go.
HT is working, so I have to bring Seth. This can be tricky because if she changes her mind at the last minute, or once we're already there, I'll have two crying kids to contend with.
But she wants to go. And I have to allow her to be her own gage. She's already said she feels nervous. Not a good sign. Hopefully karate will get some jitters out.
Cover me people, we're going in.

crossing my fingers
Thinking of you and sending happy vibes! International fan club is rooting for Riley.
I have no idea what a Chuck E Cheese is but it sounds scary, like something out of a horror film. If Riley wants to go I will trust her judgement, grit my teeth and go. I'll keep the faith!
I'm sending lots of love and light toward that cheesy place for ya... but at the same time, I'm wishing that chain out of existence altogether. One good thing about the tiny town of Hell, PA - No Chuck E Cheese for more than 2 hours in any direction. Ahh.
We're here for you...if she melts, please remember that Chuck E. Cheese is the nastiest place on earth...FOR ANYONE.
And IF there is a meltdown, have a Plan B. Hopefully, there is a nice quiet Starbuck's nearby...you guys can have a cocoa while someone watches Seth at Chuck E????
I had to drag her in screaming and crying. She buried her head in my chest for about ten minutes. Then, she walked around with me and used her tokens.
Then she had cake.
Then she had FUN!!!
By the end of the party she was dancing on the Chuck E. TV screen, shaking her booty.
My brave girl kicks butt!
GO Riley!!!!
You see?? YOU SEE???? By golly that girl has some balls! The international fan club would chair dance if it wasn't emotionally exhausted and also cream crackered from a day out.
That is awesome progress!! Congrats! Now get out those anti-bacterial wipes and lysol...
I detest Chuck E. Cheese!! :)
Yes, I'll be hosing both of them down shortly.
P.S. Seth said, "Mom. I think the commercial for Chuck E. Cheese lies, because it says 'where kids play and moms relax,' but there is no way you could relax there."
Don't let the fact that he's standing on the trampoline in his tie dye shirt and Cars underwear, swinging two plastic clothes hangers around creating a hanger swinging "routine" fool you. The boy is gifted.
What a relief! I drove by a Chuckie's today and shuddered thinking about what you were being subjected to.
Go get'em Riley!!! Kick butt! Take names!!!
Brave girl! Brave Mama for letting go and letting her try!
Re: hosing them down -- I guess it would be superfluous (and needlessly spiteful) to tell you what my neice did in a Chuck E. Cheese ballpit when she was four.
I have nightmares about ever having to return to Chuck E. Cheese. Just thinking about the noise levels in those places gives me a headache.
Bravery runs in your family, MO'N. Runs deep.
Another successful day for the O'Ns. That Seth is quite a guy. And Riley? Beyond brave. She's booty-shaking brave.
I'm dying to know what happened. I hope all is well. Happy Easter (I hope!).
So? Tell us everything! Proud of you for even ATTEMPTING that one!
I clicked on the comments, hoping to hear all it all went - bravo to both your kids! Seth cracks me up, and Riley's bravery is inspiring. Think they come by those traits honestly!
Re: Seth's comment (in your comment) - he blows me away with his awareness.
Re: Riley's damn-the-torpedoes bravery - she's a rock star!
Ahh Chucky Cheese. They should be charged with disturbing the peace of parents everywhere.
Now, anytime that Riley is feeling overwhelmed you can point out that she survived (and enjoyed!)the zenith of sensory overload experiences! Brave girls, both of you.
Seth is amazing. Gifted in mind and heart.
Gawh-- I get overload in that place! I hope it went well.
:)
Haha! What a victory! So glad she had fun!
My girls know that they don't even dare ask to attend a party there. I get such sensory overload that I feel like vomiting just walking in the door, never mind what they feel.
My compromise is to invite the birthday girl/boy over to our house for a playdate another time. Hope you made it!
